Portland’s Lithuanian heritage school. The name Atžalynas (roughly “ut-juh-leen-us”) means “sprouts.” Classes are in Lithuanian and center on language as the base of cultural and ethnic identity, with festivals, heritage, and traditions woven into lessons.

Mission
The mission of Lithuanian Heritage School Atžalynas is to keep Lithuanian identity alive. The main focus is teaching Lithuanian as the foundation of language, culture, and nationhood. Lessons include the main Lithuanian holidays so children learn traditions and customs. The goal is to give children a place to speak Lithuanian with peers, which they do not get in regular local schools.
